Kollektive Linux is NOT a new operating system. It is a distribution based on the Linux kernel written by Linus Torvalds and improved over the years by Alan cox and many other programmers. The latest kernel is vmlinuz-2.4.xx released in January 2001 officially. We have been working on this kernel to be the core of our optimized desktop distribution. We differ from Aryabhatt Linux and Aryan Linux in maintaining the integrity and the quality of the Free Software Community as worded by Richard M Stallman in www.gnu.org

We intend to

· Provide a platform bundled with software free of cost (opensource (to help them know what is happening inside), including the source code that is customisable) to the Indian market with a special customized flavour. Users wouldn't have to spend money for the Operating System and Office automation apps any more.

· To provide for the growth of the developer community (and the 'hacker' community with the MIT values of learning) which has been curbed because of the undocumented features of the dominating platforms.

· Target desktop and SOHO users by concentrating on providing a desktop solution (not a windows clone). · Provide emulators to allow legacy applications to run inside Linux. This is to help users transit easily from other operating systems to Linux.

· Provide support for multiple file systems to help users interchange files from their older platforms with ease.

· Create special features for developers and incorporate as many development environments as possible to assist developers.

· To layer the kernel and completely modularise the kernel keeping only the bare minimum that is necessary to boot the system. This makes the OS load much faster.

· Write drivers and utilities for hardware commonly available in India. Provide generic driver writing kits, which can produce drivers for non-existent hardware using wizards.

· Maintain POSIX compliance and avoid introducing too many new standards that could violate POSIX compliance.

We believe that Linux in India would be able to curb piracy and promote free software in all desktops.

There are of course a host of other advantages we have thought of, that would be provided if this were to be done.
